Through cell division, banana plants produce leaves that develop into a pseudostem and produce fruit. The bud forms in the bottom part of the plant and grows up through the centre of the pseudostem to the top. The arrow-shaped bud pushes through the top of the plant and its weight then causes it to change direction and grow towards the ground. Bananas go through a unique process known as  negative geotropism . Instead of continuing to grow towards the ground, they start to turn towards the sun. The fruit grows against gravity, giving the banana its familiar curved shape. But why? The answer lies in the botanical history of the banana. It originated in the middle layer of the rainforest, where there is little sunlight. If the fruit were to grow towards the small amount of light that penetrates sideways through the vegetation, the plant could overbalance and topple over. So bananas developed a way of growing towards the light without detaching the plant.     ...

A group of iOS developers has called on Apple to commit to allowing free trials for all apps in the App Store by July, while adding that it would eventually demand a "reasonable revenue cut". Apple currently receives a 30 percent cut of what revenue developers earn from the App Store. The group, which calls themselves "The Developers Union", detailed their demands in an open letter to the tech giant on Friday, MacRumors reported. "We believe that people who create great software should be able to make a living doing it. So we created The Developers Union to advocate for sustainability in the App Store," the letter read. "Today, we are asking Apple to commit to allowing free trials for all apps in the App Stores by the tenth anniversary of the App Store this July. After that, we'll start advocating for a more reasonable revenue cut and other community-driven, developer-friendly changes," it said. On its website, the Developers Un...

Market had a sharp trend reversal last week because of minutes. The previous week, market went to a new low below $250 Billion. Now that the free fall has stopped, the market has recovered significantly, touching a high of $338 Billion. We’re still far away from the all time high of $822 Billion in January. This is not a confirmed trend reversal for the market. Most Cryptocurrencies still follow Bitcoin and if Bitcoin goes down, so will the market.

As of now, the feature is only available for some WhatsApp beta users. WhatsApp added UPI-based payments feature to the messaging platform earlier this year that allows you to send money to other users on the platform. Until now, the feature only allowed you to send money to your contacts, but with the latest update for Android beta, the messaging platform has gained support to request money. To being with, the feature is limited to payments initiated by QR Code or UPI ID. Also, while sending payments is easy, right within your WhatsApp conversations, to request money, the process is a little different. WhatsApp Payments is only available in India, and is currently being tested before the official rollout. WhatsApp has also recently added a new feature to the messaging platform that allows you to download deleted media. The recent beta update also added a feature to lock voice message recording, making it easier to record long voice messages. Now, without any further a...

The Nokia 7 Plus is built to last, and also remains functional. With a tall 18:9 display and dual camera made by Zeiss Optics, along with pure, stock Android, Nokia might have a bestseller in its hands. If 2017 was all about Nokia's reincarnation, then this year will be when HMD Global-backed Finnish brand consolidates itself. Which is what I took away from the launch of the new Nokia phones in India. While Espoo's debut last year was hindered by unrealistic pricing and backdated specs, it seems Nokia has listened to the feedback this time around and the result is the refreshed Nokia 6 (2018), Nokia 7 Plus and the gorgeous Nokia 8 Sirocco. Among them, I managed to get hold of the new Nokia 7 Plus today and played around with it for some time. Based on my initial impressions, the Nokia 7 Plus scores high on build quality and ease of use, but loses out on ergonomics. Knowing Nokia’s product philosophy of superior craftsmanship, real life experience and providing pure...

As Android P gets closer to completion, we are starting to see many new features that Google's next mobile OS will come with, the Vulkan Graphics API 1.1 being the latest addition. Earlier this year in March, the Khronos Group had introduced the new Vulkan Graphics API 1.1 two years after the original version was announced. Support for Vulkan Graphics API was first made a part of Android with Nougat and now, Android P is said to come with support for Vulkan Graphics API 1.1 built-in. From a user perspective, this means that you get the latest graphics standard as a part of the next iteration of Android, but the real beneficiaries are the developers who now have access to a whole set of new features. Probably the biggest change in Vulkan Graphics API 1.1 is the addition of Subgroup Operations which allows for highly-efficient sharing and manipulation of data between a number of tasks that are running in parallel on a GPU. Other additions include support for secure playback an...

Intel 8th gen processor lineup explained Earlier this week, Intel announced a new range of processors and supporting hardware. We take a look at how they fit in the already long and confusing range of processors. Intel 8th gen processor lineup explained Intel’s current generation of processor lineup is quite confusing as is, but it didn’t stop Intel from adding  11 laptop processors and 9 desktop processors along with its new H370, H310 and B360 chipsets to its portfolio. These new 8th gen Intel processors join the already available 5 laptop class processors and 6 desktop processors. Combined, this brings the total count on mobile processors to 16 parts (not counting 5 G-series processors). On the desktop side, there are now 15 parts. So, it is a legitimate question to ask, which one to buy or...

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi managed to sell over 1 million smartphones in 48 hours during online festive sales in India, carried out by retailers Flipkart and Amazon. If you break it down, that's 300 smartphones per minute on average. That's an achievement of sorts for Xiaomi, given that last year the 1 million figure was crossed  after 18 days . "This achievement marks an industry first, and is a key milestone for Xiaomi India," the company said. The Redmi Note 4  was the top seller smartphone as far as Flipkart’s Big Billion Day Sale is concerned, while of all the smartphones sold by Amazon, an overwhelming majority were Xiaomi devices. This made Xiaomi the top smartphone brand for both sales.

Intel pushed further ahead into its 8th-generation Core series with the launch of its mainstream desktop chips on Sunday night, including the 6-core/12-thread Core i7-8700K, which Intel claims is its best gaming chip ever. Intel also beefed up its Core i5 family with 6-core parts, as well as its first quad-core Core i3. Orders for the Intel’s new Core desktop chips will begin on Oct. 5, Anand Srivatsa, general manager of the desktop platform group at Intel, said. They will begin shipping later in the fourth quarter. Though Intel executives didn’t use the term, the new chips have been referred to as part of the “Coffee Lake” family. Of the six new desktop chips that Intel announced, the flagship offering is clearly the Core i7-8700K, which Srivatsa touted as its best gaming processor ever. The new Core i7-8700K will offer an additional 25 percent in frames per second running Microsoft’s Gears of War 4, versus its 7th-gen Core i7-7700K—a 4-core, 8-thread part. Multitasking, though—s...
